Daytona State College selected Architects Design Group (ADG) to provide programming, design, and construction administration services to develop an indoor firing range. Project goals for this new campus public safety training facility include providing security and safety for students, designing the new facility to seamlessly fit within the existing campus’ architectural context, and to provide support for the college’s public safety programs in training new recruits, by providing additional advanced training opportunities.
The new range will be approximately 15,173-SF, not including site work and parking space. It is designed to have 18 lanes at 50 yards each, which follow FDLE standards as many trainees are part of FDLE’s Region VII. This range will accommodate 175+ students annually and include a virtual 360 firearms training room, classroom, gun cleaning area, and additional support spaces.
As this facility will be located on an active campus, ADG’s design primarily focuses on student safety as well as ensure construction is quick and efficient, to minimize disruptions to surrounding buildings on campus.
A few challenges that are unique to developing a firing range on a campus are student safety, security, and acoustic considerations. The range will be designed for total containment of projectiles to keep students, faculty, and visitors safe. Unique design solutions ensure the campus experience is not disrupted by the training activities within the range environment.
