As the specialty design architect, ADG worked with a local architecture firm to design the new Institute of Public Safety at Eastern Florida State College (EFSC). The 67,660-SF, three-story training facility provided space for comprehensive training of public safety officers on the Melbourne campus. The institute included administrative offices and space for EFSC to train corrections and law enforcement officers, criminal justice technology, crime scene technology, 911 / telecommunications, paralegal and emergency medical technology / paramedics in one location for a coordinated response to all types of emergencies. The facility’s design also included indoor and outdoor training venues for virtual and reality based training scenarios, including obstacle course training. The third floor of the building provided administrative space for the college president, vice president, offices, conference rooms, and the board of trustees meeting room. A rooftop terrace was designed to overlook the campus. There was also a memorial plaza included in the facility, located at the building entrance, to honor the fallen officers.
As an additional component to this project, local law enforcement determined the training complex would also be used for testing and in-service training. Advanced and specialized training space was provided with access to the outdoor training props for various scenarios.
